Willamette Valley Wine Association.
The Willamette Valley, Oregon’s leading wine region has two-thirds of the state’s wineries and vineyards and is home to more than 200 wineries. It has been recognized as one of the premier Pinot noir producing areas in the world. Buffered from Pacific storms on the west by the Coast Range, the valley follows the Willamette River north to south for more than a hundred miles from the Columbia River near Portland to just south of Eugene. To the east, the Cascade Ranges draws the boundary between the Willamette Valley’s misty, cool climate and the drier, more extreme climate of eastern Oregon. In ideal years the maritime climate provides the best conditions possible for growing the cool-climate grape varieties Oregon is best known for – Pinot Noir. In lesser years,
fall rains can be tricky and malicious, causing reactions among winemakers ranging from minor hair pulling to outright despair.
This web site is an excellent resource for you if you are making travel plans. You will find detailed information on the wineries, restaurants, Hotels, B&B’s and much more.
Chehalem Mountains Winegrowers
The contiguous land mass known as the Chehalem (pronounced “Sha-HAY-lum”) Mountains, is an AVA that includes several wine growing regions gaining independent recognition for their wines. An estimated 150 vineyards are planted within the AVA. With an average size of 12.5 acres, this patchwork of small, family-owned vineyards on varying soil types and elevations from 200 to well over 1000 feet above sea level is an exciting source for exquisite wines. While best known for Pinot Noir, the Chehalem Mountains are also ideal for other cool climate wine grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Gamay Noir and Gewurztraminer. Family-owned vineyards are nurtured with knowledge and care. During harvest, you’ll likely find winery crews enthusiastically aided by family, friends and neighbors working together to pick and sort the grapes by hand. Here, great wines are made with pride and passion.
Some of my favorite vineyards and wineries are located here. Don’t let the big magazines fool you to think that all of the best wine only comes from the Dundee Hills. There is great wine being made all over the Willamette Valley and this is just one more area of distinction.
The Dundee Hills Winegrowers Association
The Dundee Hills is the heart and soil (play on words there) of Oregon wines. Home to Oregon’s earliest Pinot noir growing history, it is also fast becoming a fine-wine destination reminiscent of Burgundy, France. Located just 28 miles southwest of Portland, and 40 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, the Dundee Hills appellation is situated within an irregular circle of about 6,490 acres in total, of which more than 1,264 acres of vineyards are planted. This region is unique for its higher elevation, warmer nighttime temperatures, less low-elevation fog and frost, and lava-based Jory soil series of reddish silt, clay and loam soils. With a wonderful diversity of wineries ranging from the rustic and state-of-the-art to grand Domaines, the Dundee Hills offers some of the most extraordinary, elegant and sought-after Pinot noir in the world.
North Willamette Vintners Association
Located at the northern edge of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, we are a cluster of independent spirits pursuing dreams of crafting the finest wines from the most fertile environment. Passion, creativity and diversity guide our way. We shape the northern gateway into Oregon’s wine country. Residing just minutes from Portland, on the path to scenic Oregon coast and to the heart of the Willamette Valley alike, you will find our wineries and vineyards easily accessible for either a weekend trip or a day excursion. The North Willamette Vintners welcome you to our home. We hope you explore the diversity offered in every glass poured by our members.
Geolink Wine is based in Arcata , CA and is committed to delivering quality handcrafted wines from the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Geolink seeks out boutique wineries that practice various sustainable methods of agriculture. Many of these wineries are small production and family owned or community oriented operations, producing anywhere from several hundred to ten thousand cases a year.
This endeavor also explores the relationship between geology and wine. How does the terroir relate to the characteristics of the wine? Recognizing the intricate relationship between the land, agricultural methods, and vinification practices is important for the overall health of the land and in delivering a quality bottle of wine.
Oregon Pinot Noir grapes are often grown with terroir in mind as many growers make their clone selections based on soil types, slope aspect, bedrock and/or microclimate.
